The Point: China-U.S. South China Sea dispute: will it be limited to a war of words?
Tensions between the U.S. and China have been high in the South China Sea. The U.S. navy has increased its deployment activities in the region, particularly since the beginning of July. Meanwhile U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently announced a formal rejection of the U.S. stance of not taking sides on the maritime disputes in the South China Sea, accusing Beijing of conducting a “campaign of bullying.” Why exactly is the U.S. ramping up its military activities? How does this approach fit into the overall U.S. strategy towards China?
